Surrounding Wei to Rescue Zhao …
Instead of taking an enemy head on, one should divert the enemy’s strength, attack vital points and avoid direct confrontation.
In 254 B.C. during the Warring states period – Zhao was under siege by the country of Wei.
Zhao requested assistance from Chi who sent General Tian and Sun Bin the master strategist to help.
General Tian wanted to lift siege on Zhao. Sun Bin counselled otherwise saying the entire army of Wei is currently besieging Zao; Wei is unprotected, if we attack Wei their army will return to defend it.
General Tian saw the wisdom in Sun Bins plan and marched on the unprotected Wei. As Sun Bin predicted Wei lifted the siege of Zhao and hastened home to Wei and walked into the trap General Tian had laid for them.
When attacks are aimed directly towards an enemy’s weak points, the advance becomes irresistible. Sun Tzu, Bing-Fa
“Is there a strategy that can use one to attack ten?” asked the King. Sun Bin replied, “Yes attack the enemy’s weak point; attack the enemy where he least expects it”. Sun Bin, Bing-Fa
