Round 9, Hard going again …

Round 9, Kalamunda V’s Jandakot at Ray Owen Reserve
This round will be the last one to be played on Ray Owen Reserve this season due to the City’s master plan to redevelop and refurbish the site.

Jandakot who are currently sitting in 8th position on the PFL ladder have won their last two games against Bassendean and Gosnells.

Our spy reports they were looking forward with their good form to knock the Cougars off in this game.

Their form would have had to improve significantly this season as they were soundly beaten in the two encounters they had with the Cougars in 2024.

The first quarter commenced at a frenetic pace with the Jets taking the Cougars by surprise by booting the first goal in the first minute!

This set the tone for the rest of the match as the Cougars struggled to make any headway to score during the term despite having the ball in their forward area for the best part of the quarter and having to work very hard for little return under pressure.

Heavy duty lifting all day!

Kaiden Pisani and Ethan Abraham saved face for the Cougars by scoring goals to lead by 3 points at quarter time.

In the second quarter the game continued with an increase in physical effort by the Jets who continued to benefit from some very poor disposal by the Cougars,  enabling them to take telling marks and make life miserable for our backline!

Fortunately for the Cougars, their forwards led by Kade McKeown, Tyler Mouritz and Kaiden Pisani broke free from the entanglement to score goals leaving the Cougars in front by 28 points at half time.

On the far boundary the spectators were beginning to worry about the lack of concentration displayed by the Cougars, as getting the ball into a scoring position was quickly repulsed and transferred into attack by the Jets who were not ‘manned-up’. This allowed them a free run down the ground to continue putting the Cougar backs under pressure.

Coach Bolton would have been very disappointed with this effort from his top side, as well as the lack of effort made by his players to provide strong leads from the center to clear the ball from the backline.

Skipper Trent Pottinger getting involved …

The third term commenced the same way as the first, with the Jets booting the first goal and showing a great deal of physical desire to win and clear the ball from stoppages. Fortunately for the Cougars the Jets run was spoilt as they kicked 3.5 for the quarter missing some easy set shots from close range.

Jackson Bowen with 2 goals and Kade McKeown with a goal saved some prestige for the Cougars in this quarter to lead by 23 points!

The final term continued with the Jets determination to end this deficit by resuming their attack from the ball toss in the center. Coach Bolton must have predicted this by giving his charges across the center line some ‘encouragement’ at three quarter time!

This caused them to rise to the challenge, with Reg Jones, Trent Pottinger, Jack Jago and Kade McKeown scoring through some clean open football to finish the game 42 points in front at the final siren.

This was a tough game to play and watch as it highlights the effort a top side must produce to stay in front of the competition.

There were many of us supporting this effort, who were disappointed with the amount of concentration, commitment, control and communication displayed in this game and trust that some of the participants will improve their performance for the Cougars as the season progresses.
