Injury Plagues the Cougars …

Round 14 Kalamunda V’s Wembley 03:05 PM, Sat, 15 Jul 23, Ray Owen Reserve

Injuries have contributed to the Cougars poor form that has seen them drift to the bottom of the PFL ladder at this stage of the season.

This round coach Trenberth and the selection committee had the problem of replacing key players Lachlan Harty, Bret van Groningen, Scott Foley and Jarrod  Brockbernd with Tiger Morris being unavailable. Josh Harris made a welcome return from injury having been out of the side since round 7.

The first quarter saw Wembley take complete control of the ruck to kick 7 goals in the first quarter before the Cougars could answer with a single goal late in the term. It appeared that ruckman Michael Garfield was also carrying an injury as he struggled against taller and heavier opponents in the center bounce downs.

In the second quarter the Cougars staged a revival kicking 3.2 to Wembley’s 1.2 This was accomplished by playing open football allowing Kyle Murray to mark and kick 2 goals with Josh Harris slotting the third.

After half time Wembley took complete control of the game, once again through their big men, gradually wearing down the Cougars efforts by kicking 2.4 to the Cougars solitary point.

Skipper Trent Pottinger ran himself ragged during this period by dropping back to help our backs, who were under siege playing on skillful taller opponents benefitting from accurate delivery downfield. Their efforts led by Daniel Griffin were full of courage!

Leo Lambert and Kade McKeown who had battled manfully all game against fast physical opponents, kicked goals during the last quarter with Josh Harris chiming in with another, however it was all to no avail as Wembley continued to steamroll all before them, kicking 6.2 for the term to go and win by 61 points.
