Cougars lose in Jacko’s 250th.

Round 16 Kalamunda V’s Whitford 03:05 PM, Sat, 29 Jul at 23 Ray Owen Reserve

The highlight of this round was Curtis Jack’s 250 games for the Cougars.

Jacko in Action …

‘Jacko’ a life member is now in his 16th season and is one of the all-time legends in our club. A special tribute to him has been prepared by Alex Haight available in This Weeks Topic, Curtis Jack 250 Games

The Cougars faced a daunting task in this round against Whitford currently sitting in 4th position. After losing to top side Baldivis by 4 points last week the ‘Warriors’ would have been very keen to play the Cougars who beat them by 11 points in round 7.

Added to the task were the number of serious injuries sustained by the Cougars in recent rounds making team selection difficult.

Coach Trenberth has had plenty of headaches recently trying to replace star players to prevent the side falling further, as the Cougars are now facing relegation sitting in 9th position, second bottom on the ladder.

Not a great deal can be said about this game as the Cougars could only manage 3 points in the first quarter, despite having as many entries into their forward line as the Warriors did. Fortunately they  kicked inaccurately in scoring 1.5

In the second term despite the best efforts of Cormac White, Jayden Kegg and Joel Peters, the Warriors used fast accurate short passing into the wind, to set up their tall forwards who scored 4.1, where the Cougars could only manage 1.3 with the wind.

This quarter set the tone for the rest of the game as the Warriors with their physical strength and height began to wear the Cougars down, despite courageous efforts from Vlas Kailis, Mitch Massam and skipper Trent Pottinger dropping into the backline to help out.

In the third quarter despite a brief revival by the Cougars, the Warriors went on their way with accurate foot and hand passing to kick 4.4 to the Cougars 2.2

The ‘Cougar Faithful’ who were camped on the eastern boundary continued their verbal ‘encouragement’ of Whitfords players and the umpiring during this term. This may have irritated the umpires as they make some very strange umpiring decisions, that were not in the Cougars best interests!

They were silenced in the last quarter when the Warriors kicked 5.1 to our 1.1 and Kurt Monaghan No. 4 for Whitford pointed at the scoreboard to show we were 10 goals behind and soundly beaten.

Final scores: Kalamunda 4.9 – 33, Whitford 14.11 – 95

Best players: Jackson Bowen, Joel Peters, Cormac White, Jayden Kegg

Goals: Jackson Bowen 1, Joel Peters 1, Kade McKeown 1, Trent Pottinger 1

Special mentions: Bret van Groningen & Mitch Massam – never stopped trying.

Bruce Glover reporting:

Mark of the day: Quarter 1. A great one hander by Adrian Cowin

Some great leaps and ruck work by Cormac White and a number of well-coordinated multi player forward movements.
