Round 13, Bassendean V’s Kalamunda, at Jubilee Reserve.
Bassendean who are currently sitting at the bottom of the C1 ladder appeared to be another easy victory for the Cougars, who beat them easily in round 4 at Ray Owen by 80 points.
Despite this win in round 4, the Cougars were surprised by the Swans determination and close checking which caused them to lose composure at stages throughout the match. An example of this was their 3rd quarter, when ignoring their game plan, they blazed away with the wind with ‘pot-shots’ from outside the 50m arc.
This resulted in a poor return for effort. The Cougars allowed their forward line to become congested suiting the Swans defenders and they struggled to kick 1.6 for the term!
The Cougars now have a confident and mature side and will use this opportunity to perfect and polish their skills for rounds 14 and 15 against Melville and Mosman Park, who beat the Cougars by 9 points in round 6.
The Swans started this game quickly by booting the first 2 goals and putting plenty of pressure on the Cougars backs led by Josh Touchell.
The Cougars then steadied in the middle through Trent Pottenger and Tiger Morris who set up opportunities for Kaiden Pisani, Tyler Mouritz and Ashton McGowan to mark and convert. Trent who was having a stellar quarter added a goal late in the term, to help the team lead by 10 points at the first break.
In the second quarter with Cormac White and Jack Amos winning in the ruck the Cougars were able to fend off a very determined Swans effort and kick 4.6 and hold the Swans scoreless for the term.
Again, in the third quarter the Cougars started to lose concentration and make mistakes with disposal, allowing the Swans to bog the game down resulting in stoppages restricting the Cougars scoring to 3 goals. The Swans only goal came through a 100-meter umpiring penalty against the Cougars, due to frustration with some of his decisions in this period.
It appeared Coach Bolton may have offered his team some ‘advice’ regarding their style of play in the third term as the Cougars lifted in the last quarter and despite a spirited effort by the Swans, they went on and kicked another 5 goals to win by 77 points.
